Little Yellow Rice Co.
is a Peranakan supper club experience, exploring Nyonya culture through the flavours of Hainan & Malaysia.
Our Peranakan Heritage
Our family has a rich cultural heritage of Peranakan descent. But the single act that defines us was the day that my great-grandfather set out on a boat from Hainan, off the South coast of China to Malaysia to set up a kopi (coffee) house in the suburbs of Penang.
Peranakan // refers primarily to Straits-born Chinese — that is, to those born in the former Straits Settlements (specifically, Singapore, Penang, and Melaka) or in the former British Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia) and their descendants.
Our Food & Events
We host regular pop-up supper clubs and food events across the country. Typically during the course of the evening, you’ll experience a selection of family-favourite dishes as curated by the Ooi klan — enjoyed in an informal setting.
Expect classic Nyonya dishes, alongside food which showcases the flavours of Penang, to be shared and eaten together. Every meal is accompanied by an informative talk and my lived experiences, drawing on the history of the Ooi klan, food, family and culture.
